Autumn always seems to bring with it a breath of fresh air and a renewed energy and this Fall at Café Campesino is no exception. Both at home and in the community, we're busy finding new ways to promote Fair Trade coffee. We're also evaluating how to better serve you, our customers. In this month's issue of Fair Grounds, we're asking you to let us know how we're doing by completing an online survey. You'll also find an interview with Nicaragua's CECOCAFEN, a staff and events update, a customer spotlight, a Dr. Coffee, a trivia question plus (starting this month) a new humor column. There's truly something for everyone, so enjoy!

Adapted from an Interview with Martha Villarreyna and Pedro Haslam of CECOCAFEN in Nicaragua.

Café Campesino sincerely thanks our friends at CECOCAFEN for helping us to better understand our partners and bringing us together in the name of Fair Trade.

When asked about what is happening now at CECOCAFEN while coffee is not being harvested, Martha Villareyna listed a litany of activities, making it clear that "off-season" is by no means "down-time" at CECOCAFEN! While they are closing the books on 2003/2004 sales for each village cooperative, applications are being received and approved from members of the cooperatives for new credit loans for the maintenance of the coffee plantations in 2004/2005.

Well, we figure if our little ones have to get back to school, the least that we can do here at Café Campesino is join them and demonstrate our commitment to education! In this issue of Fair Grounds we would like to ask you to participate in a brief online survey to help us become better educated…in other words, how are we doing? What can we do to serve you better? Are we falling short in any areas? Are there things that you would like to see us do that will improve the way in which we deliver our fair trade, organic and shade grown coffee and the message of Fair Trade?

Please take just a few minutes of your time to answer a selection of questions designed to help us learn more about our performance so that we can continue to provide consistently great fair trade coffee with customer service to match!

In exchange for your input and as a way saying thank you, we will give you a free box of Fair Trade Organic Tea with your next order. Please note the discount code provided on the last page of the survey and enter it in the Promotion Code box on your next order.

Here's your link to take the survey:

Kudos to Lee for placing as a finalist in the Cooperative Coffees "Cup of Excellence" competition. We are not surprised that his fine Guatemala Full City roast caught the attention of the judges, as we continue to receive emails and calls from customers who are wowed by the excellent quality and great taste of Lee’s coffee.

Café Campesino is delighted to welcome Kaycee LeRoy as our new customer service and fulfillment assistant. Kaycee is doing a great job and in her short time with us has demonstrated an impressive knack for accuracy and speed. She has also fit right in with Lee and Tripp at the roastery and its caffeine-charged work environment! Welcome aboard Kaycee!

As this newsletter hits your mailbox, Tripp and Lee will be heading off to the Green Festival in Washington, D.C. Although Hurricane Ivan has threatened to join them, the event is a great opportunity for like-minded companies to get together in the name of all that is green and good! If you plan on being in the DC area September 18th and 19th, we recommend that you check out the festival. And be sure to stop by and visit Tripp and Lee in booth 329 at the DC Convention Center if you get a chance.

On September 29th, Tripp and Bill travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to speak about Fair Trade and coffee with folks from the First United Methodist Church. First United recently opened a coffee house at their church and are doing a great job serving up Café Campesino coffee! While in Tuscaloosa, Tripp and Bill will also be speaking with a group of students from the University of Alabama about Fair Trade and Café Campesino.

A grandmother was surprised by her 7-year old grandson one morning. He had made her coffee! She drank what was the worst cup of coffee in her life. When she got to the bottom, there were three little plastic army men in her cup. Puzzled, she asked, "Honey, what are the army men doing in my coffee?"

Her grandson answered, "Grandma, it says on TV, the best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!"
