OK, so by now
you've probably noticed that there was no Fair Grounds newsletter in January. No, we
didn't forget about it. Instead, we've been working on improving the newsletter content and delivery. On the content end,
you'll find a couple of new features. One is a new column (the first of several) called
Call to Action, in which we spotlight businesses that are
"walking the walk" not just "talking the
talk." The other is a perky sidebar called Stimulating Coffee Fact
o' the Month. This will be a place to find interesting facts about coffee — either of an agricultural, scientific, or social (political) nature. And give our new contest a
try...After three years of coffee trivia contests, the trivia
samovar has run dry so we felt it was time for something new. Now
we'd like you to Show Your Café Campesino
Pride. Send us a photo of you with your favorite Café Campesino brew. Write us a love letter (it
doesn't have to be long). Compose a coffee poem or haiku (we particularly like the haiku idea). Be creative! Every month,
we'll pick one entrant at random to win a pound of their favorite Café Campesino coffee.
From a delivery standpoint,
we're now sending the Café Campesino newsletter out at the beginning of each month, rather than in the middle. This should alleviate any confusion about how long the monthly newsletter special or contest lasts, and allow us to better manage our own internal operations.
So, with that said, welcome to
Fair Grounds, 2006 style. We hope you like it.

We created this unique blend of coffee for that critical first cup each morning (actually,
it's a blend designed specifically for the traditionally caffeinated Bike Ride Across Georgia). Whether
you're getting up to jog a few miles, read the morning paper or dash off to work, this robust blend of Guatemala Full City, Sumatra Full City, and Nicaragua Dark will most definitely do the trick!

On Wednesday, January 25th, Bill and Tripp set up shop in the Georgia State Capitol building to serve up Café Campesino and participate in
Georgia's annual Sustainable Business Day, hosted by Senator Jeff Mullis, Representative Pat Gardner,
Georgia's Department of Economic Development, and Sustainable Business
Partners, a resource center for sustainable businesses.
This special event saluted innovative Georgia businesses like Café Campesino that are not only contributing to the
state's economic growth, but are also reducing waste and improving air and water quality for all Georgians. With great flourish (as befits an occasion of this kind) Representative Pat Gardner, member of the Committee on Natural Resources and Environment, and Senator Jeff Mullis, Chair of the Senate Economic Development Committee, introduced a resolution commending the selected Georgia companies for their
"outstanding citizenship and for creating innovative solutions and business
models."
Rep. Gardner commented:
"As more people move to Georgia, greater demands are placed on our natural resources. I am introducing this resolution to make the point that it is time for our
state's leadership to encourage innovation that accommodates the need for both economic development and environmental
protection." Polly Sattler, President of Sustainable Business Partners
added,
"These businesses are models of innovation, environmental responsibility and good business operations. They turn problems into
profit."
At Café
Campesino, we're brimming with pride to be a part of
Georgia's sustainable future.

Tripp is headed to Nicaragua from
February 5th through the 12th as part of a 15-person delegation headed by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) that will bring together Nicaraguan farmers, CRS staff, Fair Trade companies, and consumers to build the kind of direct relationships that are at the heart of the Fair Trade model. Though most of the time will be spent on coffee farms with members of CRS-supported cooperatives, participants in the weeklong visit will also meet with local Church representatives and CRS partners. Tripp will peel off from the delegation at the end of the week to meet with our friends at
CECOCAFEN.
On February
10th, Geoffrey is heading to the new Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center located 20 miles east of Atlanta in Mansfield, Georgia, to proudly serve Café Campesino coffee and exhibit at the 9th Annual Georgia Organics Conference. With more than 25 cutting edge workshops, in-depth educational sessions, farm tours, a candidates forum, children's programs, a trade show and the ever popular Organic Banquet, it’s a jam-packed event. See
www.georgiaorganics.org/events/
for conference details.
Then, on
February 24th, Mr. Pomeroy goes to Washington for CoffeeFest at the DC Convention Center. This is our first time doing the show in DC and we’re pumped. We’ll be exhibiting at the three-day event, billed as one of the most dynamic coffee trade shows in the country. Tripp is taking Geoffrey
and Lee along and the intrepid travelers will be serving up some fine coffee, talking Fair Trade and explaining why every restaurant, natural food market and coffee house in the Mid-Atlantic should be serving Café Campesino coffee. If you should happen to be in the area, you’ll find us at
Booth #516. To learn more about the show, visit
www.coffeefest.com.
In
mid-February, Bill begins his annual sabbatical to Xela, Guatemala. Ordinarily, this would be a chance for Willie to recharge his batteries, but between visiting with our producer cooperatives in the Western Highlands of Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico and working on Cooperative Coffees’ matters, Bill’s trip promises to be more work than play. Tenga un buen viaje, Guillermo!
With great joy, Café Campesino welcomes our new fulfillment dynamo
Maty de Barrios! Originally from Huixtla in
Chiapas, Mexico, Maty and her family moved to Americus nine years ago. Between her inspiring work ethic and positive, happy attitude, we consider ourselves quite fortunate to have Maty on board.

In this new column, Café Campesino shines the spotlight on like-minded individuals or organizations that are putting their beliefs into action for the betterment of all. This month, we introduce you to
Bioneers.
Some people have to follow a dream and for Kenny Ausubel, that dream was saving the environment. In 1990, he founded The Collective Heritage Institute, aka Bioneers, to conduct educational and economic development programs on ways to conserve biological and cultural diversity, traditional farming practices, and environmental restoration. Bioneers’ broad vision of environment encompasses the natural landscape, cultivated landscape, biodiversity, cultural diversity, watersheds, community economics, and spirituality. They seek to unite nature, culture and spirit in an Earth-honoring vision, and create economic models founded in social justice.

With the annual football ritual known as the Super Bowl coming up, we thought this was appropriate:
"It is time for us all to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever - the one who recognizes the challenge and does something about
it."
